Future-Proofing a Reimagined Active Ethernet World… the AXOS Way

The term “future-proof” is considered an industry buzzword defined as a product, service, or technological system that will not need to be significantly updated as the underlying technology advances or evolves over time. Future-proofing has been described as an exclusive process of trying to anticipate future developments such that subsequent actions can be taken to minimize negative effects while capitalizing on those with positive impacts.

With the above in mind, on August 21, Calix announced a new AXOS Gigabit Ethernet solution powered by AXOS that streamlines operations and future proofs Active Ethernet (AE) with software-defined ONT management and service provisioning capabilities. This is driven by abstracting Active Ethernet services from the supporting ONTs and associated servers into the AXOS platform, thus removing dependence on the hardware. This results in creating a common operation, service management and provisioning model that results in dramatically simplifying AE service deployments.

Software-defined ONT management and service provisioning are natural extensions of the hardware independent AXOS platform. With AXOS, you will benefit from a fully abstracted service layer, hardware independence, common service models and workflows, as well as a stateful, always on operational environment---all of which will dramatically simplify your operations. Now service providers with Active Ethernet networks have the flexibility to adopt new architectures and support new solutions without changing their operating systems. Common service models and stateful operations reduce OSS/BSS integration time, increase operational efficiency, and deliver significant cost savings.

The new AXOS Gigabit Ethernet GE-24 r2 line card offered on the E7-2 Intelligent Modular System future proofs Active Ethernet with the following attributes and/or capabilities:

  • Rapid deployment of high-density business and residential services
  • Common ONT provisioning and management model
  • Simplified network operations through consolidation of back-office servers
  • Optimized Gigabit Ethernet service delivery with enhanced diagnostic capabilities
  • Unified services and network management

For the first time, service providers running these types of point-to-point networks can manage them the same way they would manage PONs. This is a game changer and enables a massive disruption to the current Active Ethernet market… now that’s AXOS Active Ethernet Reimagined. If you would like to learn more about this innovative solution, be sure to watch the replay of our August 27 AXOS GE-24 r2 “Active Ethernet Reimagined” solution webinar here.
