How To Put Your Subscribers' Needs First: Deploy a Simplified Network

In the new era of broadband, broadband service providers (BSPs) must go beyond bandwidth to deliver capabilities that put the subscriber first to help differentiate their services and brand. Gone are the days when subscribers just checked their e-mail or surfed the web. Broadband is now an essential service that supports working and learning from home, video streaming, telehealth, home and family security, community connectivity, and more. BSPs must adapt to this rapidly changing environment and use networks that are easy to deploy, simple to operate, and help differentiate their services and brand.

Building a traditional access network with multiple systems inflexible to these changing subscriber needs and the BSP’s business objectives is impractical. Instead, BSPs must adopt a new approach that enables quick response to changing broadband service requirements and offers highly available services, new applications, and operational efficiency.

Calix’s innovative approach to broadband networks is the simplified network architecture. We utilize modern technologies to make network deployment and operation easier. Moving all service-enabling network functions—such as service routing, subscriber management, and service delivery—closer to the subscriber, we transform the access edge domain.

Benefits of a Simplified Network

Consolidating and moving service-enabling network functions closer to the subscriber makes them easier to manage for several reasons:

  • Accelerated time to market. Reduce the number of systems and router ports to purchase, configure, manage, and operate. This simplifies your network topology and makes it easier to manage, troubleshoot, and optimize the performance of the service.

  • Optimized operational efficiency. Automated network configuration and workflows enable more efficient use of resources. Operational workflows are automated instead of employees performing tasks manually—reducing operating costs and improving network performance.

  • Faster problem resolution. Common operational models make it easier to identify and diagnose issues. Network operators can use real-time analytics and monitoring to quickly identify and troubleshoot problems—reducing trouble ticket time, lowering service downtime, and directly correlating to your subscriber satisfaction.

  • Enhanced subscriber experience. Network functions are available in software modules (unlike traditional networks with purpose-built hardware), providing flexibility and speed to deploy what is needed where necessary. BSPs can deliver customized services by managing service policies based on the user's location, device type, and usage patterns—providing a better subscriber experience and higher satisfaction.

The simplified network is one way BSPs can deliver capabilities that put the subscriber first. In addition, BSPs need to improve operational efficiency and ensure always-on availability—which is accomplished by the new era of FTTx.
