Today’s temperature in Nashville, where I live was 34°C, that’s 94°F and nearly 60 percent humidity. Yes, we’re right in the middle of the dog days of summer. The dog days of summer come from Greek and Roman astrology as the days when Sirius the dog star was visible. These days are also connected with days of extreme heat, thunderstorms, and lethargy.
But the dog days are also in the middle of the year, so while sitting on the porch hoping to catch some hot summer night breezes, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the first half of 2017 and hint at where we might go next.
So far, this year in 10G PON, it’s been a busy year. Calix was in the news several times related to XGS-PON and NG-PON2. Some highlights include:
- The world’s first NG-PON2 service on a live service provider network
- First Multi-10G Channel Bonded NG-PON2
Service providers like CenturyLink, Verizon, Deutsche Telecom, Vodafone, and SK Telecom are all talking about NG-PON2, with Verizon stating at the recent NG-PON2 Council meeting at Fiber Connect 2017 that they plan to be deploying at some level late 2017/early 2018.
The excitement doesn’t end there. These achievements were made possible by AXOS, the world’s only SDA. Because of AXOS, Calix was able to rapidly:
- integrate the E7-2 with AXOS into Pilot’s SDN architecture
- Redefine the access network with the Routing Protocol Module (RPm) and the Subscriber Management Module (SMm)
So where do we go from here? Well, I can tell you, we’re not slowing down! Even though it’s the dog days of summer, we’ve only just begun.
As we look forward to the second half of 2017 and the cooler days of fall, we have a lot planned for AXOS, NG-PON2, and our AXOS access systems, the E9-2 Intelligent Edge System, E7-2 Intelligent Modular System, and the E3-2 Intelligent PON Node.
