Calix Taps a Massive 80 Percent of New High Speed Fiber Deployments in Germany With BREKO Membership

SAN JOSE, CA – September 28, 2021Calix, Inc (NYSE: CALX) today announced that it has joined BREKO, the largest fiber network association in Germany. This strategic move enables Calix to tap into massive new fiber deployments in Germany, Europe’s largest economy—and accelerate the rollout of blazingly fast, Always On 10G networks with the Network Innovation Platform (AXOS®) and the Intelligent Access EDGE. As sections of new fiber networks are completed in record time with huge year-over-year OPEX and CAPEX savings, greenfield German broadband service providers (BSPs) can excite eager subscribers with amazing cloud-based services at superior speeds, while leveraging the comprehensive support of Calix Professional Services to significantly accelerate training, deployment, and adoption.

“There are approximately 380 BREKO local members of which 220 are alternative fixed broadband network operators which account for roughly two-thirds of the competitive FTTB/H deployment in the country,” said Dr. Stephan Albers, Managing Director of BREKO. “We are excited that Calix, the leading access provider, software and system vendor in North America, has joined BREKO. Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, Calix brings with it an unparalleled track record of innovation and positive industry disruption. We are eager to work with the Calix team and tap into its many years of experience with greenfield service providers to significantly bolster Germany's 17 percent fiber adoption rate.”

Calix teams—already on the ground in Germany—are working with multiple BREKO members to accelerate the replacement of outdated copper-based infrastructure with cutting-edge 10G fiber networks. These Always On networks will deliver breakneck speeds and support a new generation of cloud-based services and applications, while slashing CAPEX and OPEX by dramatically increasing efficiency and radically simplifying operations with the Network Innovation Platform (AXOS) and the Intelligent Access EDGE.

“The demand for internet connections with high bandwidth has increased significantly in Germany (according to a BREKO market analysis), and companies and investors are ready to invest a lot of capital. Over the next five years alone, at least 43 billion euros are available for the independent expansion of fiber optic networks in Germany,” said Eoin Heaney, AVP Sales Europe at Calix. "The planned fiber optic networks are the basis for future broadband services—and an indispensable tool for building digital autobahns. This is why the Federal German Government plans to invest up to 12 billion euros in various connectivity projects as part of its plan to deliver gigabit broadband service across Germany by 2025. We are excited to contribute to this initiative. By joining BREKO, we will help accelerate greenfield fiber rollouts throughout the country—building incredibly fast Always On, everyPON 10G networks with the Network Innovation Platform (AXOS) and the Intelligent Access EDGE, while enabling BSPs to massively slash their OPEX and CAPEX year after year.”

Joining BREKO marks a critical milestone for Calix as the company strategically expands its influence in leading international industry organizations, associations, and standards bodies. These include the Broadband Forum (BBF), CETS, IETF, ITU, and the WiFi Alliance. Calix is actively participating in multiple working groups and projects in the above-mentioned organizations—providing valuable thought leadership and expertise in the development of standards, networking specifications, reference implementations, interoperability guidelines, and certifications. As part of BREKO, Calix will participate in discussions around new fiber investments and business models to accelerate 10G network rollouts and help members meet the fiber deployment targets outlined in the new German Telecommunications Act.
