Calix Invited to Join ONOS Project

PETALUMA, CA – March 29, 2016Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX), the world leader in enabling service providers to deliver a gigabit experience to their subscribers, today announced it has been invited to join ON.Lab’s ONOS project as a collaborator. As part of the company’s first contribution to ONOS, Calix will be creating an Apache Kafka northbound interface within ONOS, allowing existing and new applications written in virtually any language to integrate with ONOS via Kafka clients. With this contribution, ONOS will be opened up to a wide number of non-Java applications, significantly expanding the scope of control of ONOS. These new applications include those running critical infrastructure in the access network, which will now be made portable and reusable, allowing seamless migration into hosted environments.

“ONOS is leading the charge to transform network deployment strategies for service providers as they adopt SDN concepts across their networks,” said Bill Snow, vice president of engineering at ON.Lab. “As an innovator in access network technologies, we look forward to contributions from Calix that assist in implementing SDN principles in this challenging area of the network. Since Calix has only focused on access throughout the company’s history, our combined efforts will powerfully extend the reach of ONOS and build out a complete SDN ecosystem.”

ONOS is a carrier-grade SDN network operating system architected to provide high availability, scalability, performance, as well as rich northbound and southbound abstractions. The ONOS community includes leading global service providers, such as AT&T, China Unicom, NTT Communications, SK Telecom, Verizon, and vendor partners.

“As SDN functionality moves beyond the data centers and central offices, the access network will emerge as the next frontier for the industry,” said Shane Eleniak, vice president of product line leadership at Calix. “By extending ONOS to support non-Java based applications, Calix is accelerating the rate of innovation within service provider networks. Our AXOS platform was designed for component portability and already leverages multiple open source projects and standards. We are firmly committed to taking an active role in the open source community and this collaboration with the ONOS project is just the first of many contributions we are pursuing.”

AXOS is the first network operating system and carrier-class software platform built for the specific needs of the access network. Its unique hardware and service abstraction layer enables each independent containerized software function to be developed and operate transparently over the underlying fiber, copper, wireless, or silicon technologies driving the access network and infrastructure.
