Calix helps communications service providers drive advanced broadband services deployments across the Caribbean

PETALUMA, CA—July 12, 2010—Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced that service providers across the Caribbean have been rapidly deploying the Calix Unified Access portfolio to address advanced broadband services demand. Leveraging both copper and fiber access technologies, major Caribbean communications service providers (CSPs) like LIME (a part of the Cable & Wireless group), which serves more than two million customers in the region, are leveraging Calix for national social and economic development initiatives, and in doing so introducing world-class broadband infrastructure to the many nations of the region. With 10 new CSPs in the region becoming Calix customers in the last year, and 20 leading Caribbean CSPs now deploying Calix Unified Access Infrastructure, momentum in the region continues to accelerate along with demand.

"Broadband demand in the Caribbean continues to accelerate as the countries in the region have recognized the direct correlation between broadband access and economic and social prosperity," said Cleverston Miller, platform lead of fixed networks at LIME. "We have been working closely with the governments in the different countries to strategically invest in their communications infrastructure, and bring the region's communications infrastructure to world-class standard. The real beneficiaries are the people and businesses of the Caribbean, who are now enjoying increased access to educational, informational, and educational resources."

Common initiatives in the region include pushing "Fiber Forward" in networks, reducing the length of copper feeds to residences and business, while at the same time using the exceptional reach and capacity of fiber to dramatically reduce the number of central offices. The net result is higher bandwidth and new services to subscribers, while gaining new efficiencies across the service provider network. Calix-enabled technologies deployed range from copper-based asymmetrical digital subscriber line 2 plus (ADSL2+), very high-speed DSL 2 (VDSL2), and special circuits, to fiber-based gigabit passive optical network (GPON) and symmetrical point-to-point gigabit Ethernet (GE) services. LIME has also been migrating traditional backbone services in the access network from SONET to advanced 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GE) ring-based transport services. Typical applications range from basic residential voice and data services, to advanced entertainment services like IPTV, symmetrical data services, and mobile backhaul.

Caribbean CSPs are making use of the entire range of the Calix Unified Access portfolio, from the Ethernet eXtensible Architecture (EXA) Powered C7 Multiservice Access Platform and E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform, to a variety of E-Series Ethernet Service Access Nodes and P-Series optical network terminals. The Calix Management System (CMS) has also emerged as a key efficiency and management tool for Caribbean CSPs, who are leveraging it to provide instant service provisioning, fast service restoration, and automated exporting of reports on network bandwidth and application usage across the Calix Unified Access Infrastructure.

"Calix began serving the Caribbean region just five years ago, and we have already seen a dramatic change in the quality communications infrastructure in the region," said Mark Dressler, Calix vice president of sales for major accounts, the Caribbean, and Latin America. "We believe many of the island nations in the region to be best-in-class examples of how government can work with the private sector to encourage economic development and social improvements. We are proud of the role Calix has played in facilitating these changes, and look forward to continuing to foster the acceleration of broadband deployment throughout the Caribbean."

Calix will be displaying its Unified Access portfolio at the CANTO Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition July 11th-14th, 2010 at the World Trade Center, Piscadera Bay, Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. Demonstrations will include advanced Metro Ethernet Forum service standards provisioning of Ethernet virtual circuits on CMS across 10GE rings, GPON, and point-to-point switched Active Ethernet.
