Calix Pushes MPEG-4 High-Def Envelope at NXTcomm

Calix, together with Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB), Akimbo, Amino, Scientific Atlanta, A Cisco Company, Entone, Minerva Networks, Modulus Video, and SES AMERICOM, Demonstrates Production High Definition IPTV using MPEG-4 at NXTcomm in Chicago

JUNE 18, 2007, PETALUMA, CA—In conjunction with the Calix Compatible interoperability program, Calix, together with ADB, Akimbo, Amino, Scientific Atlanta, A Cisco Company, Entone, Minerva Networks, Modulus Video, and SES AMERICOM, will demonstrate production high definition IPTV and internet video using MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) at NXTcomm in Chicago (June 19-21, booth #5101). Service providers, whether deploying fiber to the premises (FTTP) or advanced DSL, are increasingly demanding HDTV as a critical component of IPTV and internet video service packages. The NXTcomm demonstration will be among the first exhibiting all of the components required to make MPEG-4-based HD video a reality.

According to Geoff Burke, Calix director of field marketing, "Roughly 160 of our more than 425 customers are involved in commercially deployed video service delivery as a critical component of multiplay bundles designed to meet consumer demand, stymie cable competition, and increase average revenue per user. A substantial majority of these service providers have eagerly awaited the availability of all components required to deliver production HD content using MPEG-4. As this demonstration shows, the wait is over."

The multifaceted demonstration employs ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC to encode high-definition video content for delivery over three types of access infrastructure: GPON operating at 2.4 Gbps, VDSL2 operating at 25 Mbps, and ADSL2+ operating at 15 Mbps. The demonstration shows MPEG-4 used in both packaged IPTV service bundles as well as in video streamed to internet appliances.

Matt Davis, director of multiplay research with IDC, said, "This is an important milestone toward the full realization of advanced, IP-based multiplay packages that include production high-definition video content. By pulling the pieces together, Calix is demonstrating the feasibility of delivering this content today over very-high-speed fiber- and copper-based access infrastructure."

Specific MPEG-4 AVC enabling technologies Calix is highlighting include the following:

  1. Pre-encoded MPEG-4 HD content on IP-PRIME™ from SES AMERICOM. IP-PRIME, the most comprehensive end-to-end and turnkey IPTV solution for telecommunications companies, comes with more than 275 high-quality MPEG-4 television channels including over 20 HD channels, a carrier-grade headend, a choice of consumer set-top boxes, and multiple middleware solutions that make it all work.
  2. Set-top boxes from ADB, Amino, Scientific Atlanta, A Cisco Company, and Entone. These are among the first production examples of MPEG-4 AVC HD-capable set tops.
  3. Middleware capable of controlling IPTV service packages that include HDTV content from Minerva Networks.
  4. MPEG-4 AVC encoding and compression systems designed for delivery of HD-IPTV content from Modulus Video.
  5. Internet video appliances from Akimbo that allow service providers to deliver and monetize internet-based video content.
