The 741GE, 742GE, 743GE, and 744GE ONTs are the newest addition to the broad Calix portfolio of business and mobile backhaul ONTs. These new ONTs offer a remarkable range of service capabilities in a small package. The 740GE ONTs support a full gigabit per second of bandwidth in both the downstream and upstream directions.
All four ONTs feature the unique Calix auto-detect technology, which supports both point-to-point gigabit Ethernet and GPON. The ONT senses which technology it's connected to and activates on that technology. A small business could initially be provided service over GPON, but as its bandwidth needs increase – requiring, for example, a full dedicated gigabit per second of symmetrical bandwidth – it's simple to move the subscriber from a GPON splitter to a dedicated fiber, with the Calix ONT transparently converting itself into a point-to-point GE ONT. No need to replace the ONT, no need for a truck roll.
Businesses require higher levels of service than residential customers. The 740GE ONTs feature a full complement of Ethernet Service Assurance features, based on MEF, IETF, ITU, and IEEE standards. These standards – also known as Ethernet OAM – include:
- The ability to do RFC2544 testing on the Ethernet link before turn-up of services to the customer. The 740GE ONTs loop back RFC2544 tests generated from a central testhead using the 740GE MAC swap capability.
- Ethernet performance monitoring based on the ITU Y.1731 standard, as well as the IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet Link OAM standards.
- Ethernet Connectivity Fault Management using the IEEE 802.1ag standard, which allows for troubleshooting Ethernet-based services.
These features enable service providers to offer even the smallest business an assured MEF service and have the tools to ensure conformance to a service level agreement (SLA).
The 743GE and 744GE ONTs also support two T1/E1s, which together with gigabit Ethernet makes these ONTs ideal for mobile backhaul to small cell sites and government institutions that require T1s or fractional T1 services. The 743GE and 744GE ONTs utilize PWE3 to transport T1/E1s over Ethernet.
The 742GE and the 743GE feature customer-facing optical SFPs, so that Ethernet services to the subscriber are provided over fiber interfaces. The 741GE and 744GE support an RJ45 copper interface on the Ethernet port.
Calix will continue to offer the 740G ONT, which has become a workhorse for many service providers that require a small form factor, low cost business ONT. The 740G has a single GE port and two TDM T1 ports. The 740G will continue to serve as the ONT of choice for service providers that do not utilize PWE3 for T1 delivery.
