Complete Access Network Management

The Calix Management System (CMS) delivers superior tools and interfaces to turn up and test multiservice copper and fiber networks; manage and operate the networks; and scale to support growing networks. An external, server-based management platform capable of overseeing and managing multiple standalone Calix networks, CMS performs all provisioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting operations for these networks across the entire Calix product portfolio. Additionally, it is designed to scale from small networks to large, geographically dispersed networks consisting of hundreds or even thousands of Calix access systems. CMS provides an enhanced GUI interface and delivers a more granular view and control of ACL, alarm reporting, CPR records, security and other advanced management functions. In CMS, Calix has created a management platform that sets new standards in terms of scalability, security, and ease of use.

Broad Scalability and Comprehensive Perspective

For very large service providers, CMS, with northbound TL1 interfaces, can be used in conjunction with operational support systems (OSS) to manage large, global networks with tens of millions of subscribers. For regional or national service providers, CMS operates as a standalone element management system (EMS), managing service provisioning and network troubleshooting for hundreds of independent Calix C- and E-Series networks consisting of thousands of shelves and P-Series ONTs.

Simple to Use Interface for Operational Efficiency

The CMS user interface has been optimized to meet the needs of service providers in managing a large number of network elements and service offerings. The CMS interface strikes a powerful balance between the intuitive and simple mechanism for provisioning and troubleshooting a given service, and the capacity for massive bulk provisioning and reporting for thousands of services simultaneously. Scalable to support large networks, CMS is Telecordia OSMINE certified for easy integration into existing management systems. Calix achieves this balance through the use of powerful tools including network-wide service profiles and a simple, table-based system allowing visibility and manipulation of multiple services.

Flexibility in service definition is preserved through the ability of the operator to override profile-assigned values. If, for example, in the course of DSL troubleshooting, it is determined that a particular subscriber's line requires a higher than average signal to noise margin, a higher value can be entered for that port only, tailoring the service to the individual user while still leveraging the efficiency of common profiles for bulk provisioning.

Granular and Flexible Security

CMS offers a powerful security model and user management paradigm, which allows administrators to control access rights and security privileges to the Calix network resources in a very intelligent and efficient manner. Administrators cannot only take advantage of the fact that they know their resources are secure, they can also leverage information encapsulation concepts, which allow them to expose or shelter information to different users on a very granular basis.

The security model of CMS ensures that Calix networks, while offering a level of service integration and flexibility unmatched in the industry, are still able to seamlessly integrate into any carrier network and operational model. Rather than requiring an organization to adapt to a new network management technology, CMS adapts to the organization.

CMS Support for Ethernet Service Assurance (OAM)

Communications service providers are increasingly delivering Ethernet business services for retail, wholesale, and mobile backhaul applications. These services require high availability and guaranteed performance, as specified in service level agreements (SLAs) that are a critical part of the service contracts.

Ethernet operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) tools have emerged as a simple way for service providers to monitor and manage the Ethernet circuits and ensure that they conform to SLAs. The Calix Management System (CMS) supports a variety of Ethernet OAM functions.
