Retrofit Cost Analysis by Palmetto Engineering and Consulting
A comparison of four different methodologies for broadband upgrades to existing infrastructure
As communications service providers search for ways to address the exploding subscriber bandwidth requirements in their networks and the rapidly changing business model of the traditional "Telco," many are discovering that the most valuable asset in their networks can be their existing infrastructure. The challenge lies in finding ways to utilize or complement it cost effectively to deliver advanced broadband services, and in doing so lay the foundation for future network and business transformation.
Calix asked an independent firm – Palmetto Engineering and Consulting of South Carolina – to conduct a comparison of four different methodologies for performing broadband upgrades to existing infrastructure across different vendors' access equipment and cabinet types, including "new remote terminal" deployment, "clear and fill" scenarios, the "augmented retrofit" of an existing cabinet, and the deployment of a externally mounted "blister" on a cabinet.
This detailed analysis weighs the pros and cons, as well as the costs of the approach of each vendor in each scenario. The result: Leveraging an "augmented retrofit" approach using the 1RU Calix E7-2 and the VDSL2 combo line card is the most tactically efficient and strategically impactful solution in virtually every scenario.
