MAY 26, 2004, PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA—Calix today announced that ALLTEL
[NYSE: AT] has selected the Calix C7 ultra-broadband loop carrier (UBLC) for
deployment in select central office DSLAM applications. Already deployed in the
ALLTEL outside plant and recently named the Q1/2004 global BLC market share
leader by Infonetics Research, the Calix C7 is one of the only UBLCs also able
to operate as a high density, high capacity central office DSLAM. Calix has
been a supplier to ALLTEL, which operates 3.2 million access lines, since early
2002, providing remote terminal UBLCs delivering voice and data services to
business and residential subscribers.
"We already use the Calix C7 platform for DLC applications. The flexibility and
capacity of the Calix platform also make the C7 ideal
as one of our central office DSLAM platforms," stated Shannon Leach, vice
president of network planning with Little Rock, Arkansas based ALLTEL. "This
allows us to manage one platform for dual applications, a big plus. Over the last two years Calix has proven
itself to be a very responsive and reliable supplier to ALLTEL."
The packet-based Calix C7 platform is one of the preferred solutions for ALLTEL's
central office DSLAM applications. Operating as a DSLAM, the Calix C7 supports
up to 480 DSL interfaces in a compact 8RU enclosure. With integrated POTS
splitters, the Calix C7 is able to support voice on every line and, with
integrated IGMP functionality, the Calix C7 also supports video services on
every line.
According to John Colvin, Calix vice president of field operations, "A unique aspect of
the Calix C7 is that—while it supports an extremely broad set of optical and
metallic interfaces and packet-oriented services—it makes an ideal platform for
high-density central office DSL termination. The agreement with ALLTEL is an
indication of this unique capability."
In central office applications, the Calix C7 is able to support up to 2,400 ADSL
or ADSL2+ interfaces in a single seven-foot rack with ten OC-48s worth of
uplink capacity. This same rack is able to alternatively support up to 400
Gigabit Ethernet, 1,200 Fast Ethernet, 100 OC-48, 1,200 DS3, 1,200 DS-1, or
2,400 POTS interfaces. With a pure packet core, the Calix C7 enables the
delivery of advanced IP-based voice, data, and video services.
