February 1, 2010, PETALUMA, CA—Calix, a leading provider in North America of broadband communications access systems and software for copper- and fiber-based network architectures that enable communications service providers (CSPs) to connect to their residential and business subscribers, today introduced five new line cards that significantly enhance the capacity and Ethernet capabilities of the C7 Multiservice Access Platform (MSAP)—North America's leading multiservice access platform (MSAP) (Infonetics Research, 11/2009). These new line cards bring 10 gigabit per second (Gbps) Ethernet transport and aggregation functionality, very high speed digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) and enhanced gigabit passive optical networking (GPON) services, as well as Ethernet gateway functionality to North America's most versatile MSAP, which now features 47 individual line card options to meet the diverse service requirements of today's CSPs.
Deployed at over 500 North American and international CSPs whose networks serve more than 32 millionsubscriberlines, the C7 enables these CSPs to evolve to advanced Ethernet and fiber-based services from existing copper-based legacy service offerings like plain old telephone services (POTS) and special business circuits. Leveraging the Calix Ethernet eXtensible Architecture (EXA), an Ethernet kernel based on industry standard protocols and focused on the requirements of the access network, the new EXA Powered C7 line cards further enhance this evolutionary path, delivering more capacity, higher bandwidth services across both copper and fiber, and more flexibility in bridging legacy services and advanced Ethernet services in a single, manageable platform.

New EXA Powered Line Cards Expand Service Capacity While Simplifying Service Delivery
The new EXA Powered C7 line cards share a common software core with other Calix E-Series platforms, including the new E7 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP). This commonality not only provides engineering efficiencies across the Calix Unified Access portfolio, but allows the C7 MSAP and E7 ESAP platforms to work harmoniously in the access network despite their differences in form factor and functionality, easing the complexities of service delivery and network expansion and delivering the extensibility necessary for an all-video world. In addition, each new card is fully compatible with the existing stable of C7 cards, allowing for simple service migration and preservation of necessary legacy services.
The new EXA Powered C7 line cards deliver the following value to CSPs:

Calix is also today introducing six new residential optical network terminals (ONTs). The new 700GE ONT family builds on the extensive capabilities of the 700GX ONT family by introducing two or four gigabit Ethernet ports on each 700GE ONT. Like the 700GX ONT family, each 700GE ONT is capable of auto-detecting both GPON and Active Ethernet transport. Each GE access port on the 700GE ONTs is also designed to deliver a full 1 Gbps of bandwidth in both the upstream and the downstream, and can also support multiple services and virtual local area networks (VLANs), providing exceptional flexibility and efficiency.
